Wooden model ships that depict legendary boats
Unlike plastic models, wooden model ships are less common, therefore there is less choice. This does not have any influence on the quality. Scientific MHD's priority is to only distribute the best brands of model boats. For over 40 years, we have been distributing the leading brands in historical wooden model boats: MANTUA, PANART, MAMOLI, BILLING BOATS.
Our wooden model boats showcase some of the famous boats in history and come in various scales to suit your wishes, whether you are a beginner or expert. You'll find the level of difficulty and a detailed model description on each product. This verification is important to avoid any unpleasant surprises once the box is opened. Tackling a "difficult" model when you are a beginner can be an uphill struggle and will easily lead to throwing the towel in. Remember, making wooden model ships is not so different from working on the more common plastic models. These so-called smart puzzles help to develop concentration, logical thinking and patience. The end result will leave you feeling proud of your dedication and skill. If you want to start this passionate hobby of historical wooden boat building, we would recommend starting with simple models, which are more affordable and easier to put together. There would be nothing more frustrating than not finishing a model because it is too complicated and time-consuming for a beginner level. As a beginner, you might want to avoid the Amérigo Vespucci or the Soleil Royal from MANTUA. As beautiful and as legendary these boats are, you'll need to gain a little more experience in building models beforehand. We would recommend opting for the Bluenose, the Marie-Jeanne from BILLING BOATS, or a model from the MINI MAMOLI range to begin with.
When you've gained the experience in assembling and handling materials with some of the beginner's models, you can then move on to the Victory or the Soleil Royal from MANTUA.
We would also like to give you another important tip to make things easier. It is best to have a room dedicated to building your wooden model boats. If you choose to use the kitchen table, you'll have to unpack everything and then pack it all away every day. This is a waste of precious time you could be spending on your project and what's more, where are you going to eat your dinner ?
What about the finishing touches to your wooden boat model ?
Once you have assembled the ultimate piece of your wooden model boat, before displaying it, you may wish to make it look even more beautiful by adding some colour which is possible on certain models. Scientific MHD offers a range of high coverage acrylic paints that can be applied with a brush or airbrush. If you want to add a little more coverage and thickness to our LifeColor paints, you can add a few drops of the Thickener product, which is also available on our website. Some boat models do not require painting, but you may prefer to apply a coat of varnish to the hull to make it look even more authentic. Varnish will let you fully appreciate the quality as it brings out the wonderful lathing work on the hull. Whether you want to paint or varnish your models, you will find all the necessary products on our site.
More than 150 LifeColor colours are available, so there is a good chance that you will find what you are looking for! You'll love our paint guides and theme sets, which are perfect for beginners. These sets combine the right colours for the Italian, German, Japanese and American navies (to name but a few), into one pack. You'll be able to paint your boats, making them as realistic as possible without fear of making a mistake.
