Many beginner modelers want to start with the construction of a massive 100-gun ship of the line. Most of these very expensive kits are started but never finished. The work is far too complex, and the builder has not acquired the necessary skills.

The three models "Grand Banks Dory," "Norwegian Pram," and "Bay Lobster Smack" are the three ideal models to start naval modeling and follow a perfect training path in the difficulties encountered for a progressive learning of this discipline.

Learn to build these 3 wooden boat and ship models in order.

Start with a traditional 1800s fishing Dory at skill level 1 (S029MS1470).

Continue at level 2 with a fully planked historical Norwegian Pram (S029MS1471).

Finally, the level 3 Bay Lobster Smack (S029MS1472) will prepare you for the construction of any larger wooden boat model, even a 100-gun warship.

If you wish to acquire all 3 models in a single purchase, we offer a Promotional Offer with the Model Shipways Beginner Pack (S029MS1470D).

37-page illustrated instruction manual included.

History of Lobster Smacks:

The Lobster Smacks of Muscongus Bay have a rich and fascinating history dating back to the 19th century. These boats were specially designed for lobster fishing and played a crucial role in the fishing industry of the region.

During the late 1800s, fishermen in Muscongus Bay, located on the northeast coast of Portland, Maine, began to feel the need for boats specifically suited for lobster fishing. This led to the development of Lobster Smacks. These vessels were characterized by their elegant lines and ability to sail swiftly.

Lobster Smacks were equipped with two water tanks, known as "wet tanks," which allowed for the storage of live lobsters during fishing trips. This feature was crucial as it ensured the freshness of the catch until its return to port.

These boats became iconic to Muscongus Bay and significantly contributed to the local economy. They were used by fishermen to track and capture lobsters in the resource-rich waters of the bay.

Over time, the lobster fishing industry evolved, and new technologies and methods were introduced. However, Lobster Smacks remain an important part of the maritime history of the region, bearing witness to the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Maine's fishermen.

Today, although these traditional boats have largely given way to more modern fishing methods, the legacy of Lobster Smacks endures through the stories and memories of the inhabitants of Muscongus Bay, recalling a time when these boats were at the heart of the economic activity and daily life of the region.
