Kaman SH-2 Seasprite: The US Navy’s Versatile Naval Helicopter
The Kaman SH-2 Seasprite is an American multi-role naval helicopter, in service from the Cold War to the present day. Developed for the US Navy, its first flight took place in 1959, with operational service starting in 1962.
Length (rotor folded): 11.68 m
Main rotor diameter: 13.41 m
Engines: 2 x General Electric T58-GE-8F turbines, 1,350 hp each
Configuration: main rotor + tail anti-torque rotor
Initially designed for search and rescue, light transport, and liaison missions, the SH-2 Seasprite quickly evolved. The SH-2C version introduced twin engines, boosting its performance and versatility.
Over time, the Seasprite became a dedicated anti-submarine warfare (ASW) platform, with improved versions like the SH-2D, SH-2F, and SH-2G Super Seasprite, the latter entering service in 1990.
Though retired from US service, the SH-2 Seasprite remains in use with the navies of Egypt, New Zealand, and Poland.
