The MH-6 Little Bird and its armed variant, the AH-6, are light helicopters used by American special operations forces, derived from the Hughes OH-6 Cayuse and then the Hughes MD 500 and produced by MD Helicopters. In 1960, the US Army issued a call for tenders to develop a new light observation helicopter. Hughes proposed the Model 369, competing with projects by Fairchild and Bell Helicopter. The first prototype flew on February 27, 1963. Initially designated YHO-6A, then YOH-6A, five Allison-powered prototypes were delivered to Fort Rucker, Alabama, winning the competition.
Developed on the basis of a Hughes MD 500, itself derived from the OH-6 Cayuse, this aircraft exists in two versions:
