The Royal Louis 1780 was an iconic warship of the French Navy during the late 18th century. It was designed and constructed during a tumultuous period in European history, a time when naval powers were competing for supremacy at sea.

The Royal Louis was a first-rate ship of the line, meaning it was one of the largest and most powerful warships of its time. Its construction was undertaken to strengthen the French Navy's fleet as part of France's efforts to support the American colonies during the American War of Independence against Britain.

Built at the Toulon arsenal, the Royal Louis 1780 was notable not only for its imposing size but also for its elegant design and decorative details. It was equipped with three gun decks and armed with several dozen cannons of various sizes, giving it a formidable firepower.

The ship was lavishly decorated, with elaborate sculptures and ornaments that reflected the prestige and grandeur of the French Navy at the time. Its name, "Royal Louis," referred to the French royalty and Louis XVI, the king of France at that time.

The Royal Louis 1780 took part in several naval operations during the American War of Independence and served as the flagship of Admiral de Grasse during the Battle of the Chesapeake Bay in 1781. This battle was a key element in the Franco-American victory at the Battle of Yorktown, which played a significant role in ending the war.

After the war, the Royal Louis continued to serve in the French Navy and was involved in other conflicts. However, over time, it became increasingly obsolete due to technological advancements and changes in naval design. It was eventually decommissioned and dismantled in the early 19th century.

The Royal Louis 1780 remains a symbol of French naval power at the time, as well as the importance of large fleets of ships of the line in 18th-century maritime conflicts. Its history illustrates the challenges and triumphs of the French Navy during a crucial period of world history.

The MAMOLI model kit:

The model to be constructed by MAMOLI represents the Royal Louis according to the plans of 1779 when it served as the flagship of the White-Blue Squadron, part of the American Squadron under the command of Count d'Estaing.
The assembly kit box is particularly rich in accessories and decorations. Those who are familiar with the complexity of the superstructures of this ship's deck can easily understand the challenges we had to solve in order to faithfully reproduce the actual appearance in the model.
The numerous decorative elements made of cast metal are enriched with veneers of precious wood. Thanks to its unique structure, the fidelity of reproduction has been pushed to the point that, through a window in the stern galleries, it is possible to see the interior equipment of the decks in their entirety.
The wooden ship models from MAMOLI are made with the finest wood species and remarkable quality of fittings.

The MAMOLI box of the ROYAL LOUIS is certainly one of the most accomplished in the range, along with the Friesland at the 1/75 scale.
